Artificial Lift/Automation Project Integration

Artificial Lift/Automation Project Integration

A Worldwide Integration Solution

The Problem

Coal Bed Methane (CBM) is a gaseous hydrocarbon that occurs along with coal reserves, and is similar to natural gas. In recent decades, CBM has become an important source of energy for many countries, including the U.S. and Internationally. An International energy producer utilized a variety of artificial lift and automation equipment vendors in its CBM operations, and a lack of inter-compatibility and integration was causing problems. The disjointed and fragmented system allowed for very little data integration, making assimilation and analysis difficult, and leading to high costs. With artificial lift systems and automated systems that wouldn’t communicate, they were experiencing redundancies, and needed an integrated solution to save money and improve efficiency.

The Solution

GPS developed and implemented a fully integrated Artificial Lift Electronic Submersible Pump (EPS) and Automation System, including a supply of ESPs, Variable Frequency Controllers, Sensors, Flow Measurement Controls for fluid and gas (American Gas Association – Custodial transfer), and customized Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) software development.

Integration for Artificial Lift Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) was based on a Web-oriented system, which gave the producer a single point of contact and control for gas production and other relevant aspects of the Company’s operations. The producer now seamlessly integrates gas production information with reservoir and artificial lift data, which has helped them to make more educated, cost-effective management decisions.

Benefits of the New System

  • Fully Integrates All Processes
  • Establishes Single Point of Content for Gas Production and Operations
  • Web-Based Accessibility
  • Seamlessly Integrates Gas Production, Reservoir and Artificial Lift Data
  • Saves Costs
